by and large, the federal response has been robust to hurricane sandy. more than 500,000 people have registered for temporary houses and individual assistance, fema, there on the ground right away as provided over 15 million meals, 20 million leaders of water, -- liters of water, 1.7 million blankets and 135,000 tarps. dodd has delivered 9.3 million gasoline and 270 million gallons of salt water have been pumped out of transit tunnels. there have been over 17,000 personnel and 15,000 national gassermen. i want to thank the first responders from every level from fire houses to police stations to volunteers in the neighborhood as well as the national guard from so many states that came to the aid of the northeast. the president innumerous administration officials have been on the ground surveying damage and meeting with state and local leaders. in fact governor cuomo and kristy have been here to the capitol to express their desperate need for help and support. i want to start with some positive statistics, and then go to a few areas that i'm concerned abou

there were many loved ones lost during hurricane sandy. there were many children lost in connecticut. when a loved one is no longer around the dining room table when there are gifts that were bought that were not able to be given, it's a very sad time for our country. and what i am urging my colleagues to remember is what that loss feels like in their own states. we've seen so many tragedies this last year. we've seen so many disasters over the last several years. and as senator mikulski has said and senator schumer has said, this country always stands together in these times of disaster and grave need. whether it was hurricane katrina, we stood by that state that region immediately within ten days we delivered $60 billion of aid and relief to the families in need. we did the same thing for florida. hurricane andrew left devastation in its wake. we did the same thing when tornadoes hit joplin, missouri, and tuscaloosa, alabama. we stand by families in times of need. it's the job of the federal government to keep our families and communitie

just as the nation will always remember the victims of sandy hook elementary school. i know it means when someone close to you is suddenly taken away in an unspeakable way. my family was touched by the brutal mass shooting at a loppers in san francisco in 1993. where a crazed gunman with an assault weapon killed eight people and wounded another six people. one of those people was a brave young lawyer who threw his body over his life to save hers. that young man was one of my sons best friends. i can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt how these horrific and senseless tragedies live on forever. the parents and spouses and children, their families, it changes their lives forever. since 1999, which was the year of the massacre at columbine high school, we have tried to talk about this. 250 students, teachers, and others, have been killed in school shootings. another 212 have been wounded. due to gun violence in our schools. i will break down just some of those. a 2005 shooting at red lake high school in minnesota left five people injured. an amish schoolhouse shooting in
